Becoming your true self is a game often played in inches. Pockets of discovery and growth can appear behind the obscurity of frustration, leading to stretches of brilliance. It’s a visual Evan Brock ties to his latest project. Speaking about the records in its canon (debut Slowly Spiraling Towards the Light and the forthcoming I can feel an ending), “moments of Laika Songs are supposed to sound like when you look up through the trees and can see a little sky peeking through, and the light hits the leaves just right.”

The intersection of the natural and the artificial is where Laika Songs gains most of its inertia. Fragmented synth lines intermingle with everything from lumbering acoustic guitars to luxurious saxophones, bridging the gap between environmental zen and digital confusion. I can feel an ending expands the search for meaning first dispatched on the first LP by collaborating with a wide variety of musicians and friends to divine some clearer answers.

Emboldened by post-pandemic connectivity and the power of letting control fall to chance, Evan reached out to potential players with nothing but demos and deep knowledge of their musical histories. Stems would serve as signposts, but finished products diverged from original designs. The result accidentally mirrors Evan’s lyrical bent, which borrows from “lyrical slippage,” a stylistic choice where lines rub against one another unevenly. This friction sees Laika Songs play with time, space, and the anxieties shared between generations while the music serves as a reliable, well-characterized setting. The vignettes on display here amble through self-doubt and ruminate on despondency, but there is hope amid any despair. It’s how Brock defines Laika Songs, a project that has “always been about learning and finding my way.”

With Evan Brock as its nucleus, Laika Songs features bassist Dominic Angelella, vocalists Chanele McGuinness and Heaven Schmitt, guitarists Kris Hayes and Meg Duffy, Joseph Shabason on woodwinds, violinist Abby Gundersen, and Dan Bailey on drums and percussion.
